St. Lucia

St. Lucia

On December 13 NS/26 OS, we remember St. Lucy of Syracuse, a martyr who died in the fourth century. She was highly honored in the Middle Ages, but many traditions related to her have been preserved in Sweden, where she is beloved for saving people from a famine through her miraculous intercession. Her work serving persecuted Christians in hiding is remembered through her crown of candles, which Scandinavians love because she is a beacon of light during the darkest part of winter. Read on for our collection of traditions for celebrating St. Lucia in your little church!
